This summer is going to be a great one! You are going to eat entirely healthy and never go out for fast food and you’re going to stay away from sugar. Does this sound like what you’re saying in your head? Yeah, me neither. BUT, what I am saying in my head is that I am going to start making healthier choices, eating healthy foods, and TRYING to stay away from those things, that’s how eating healthy starts, simply trying and making it a goal. Try some of these tricks to eat healthier this summer.
Healthy Foods to Start Eating This Summer
• Drink more water
o Summertime is filled with soda, Gatorade, lemonades, and other sugary drinks, it’s easy to take it on the go, tastes good, and the kids like it! But do you know how much sugar you are really drinking? One soda a day isn’t SO bad, even though it’s over the recommended sugar intake for the day. (Yes, just one soda and you’re over your said limit!) But how many of you drink three, or four, or even more sodas and soft drinks per day? It’s a bad habit that needs to be broken! Start by replacing one drink a day with a bottle of water, and keep going until you no longer need that sugary drink. It will boost your energy and metabolism and is a great start to eating and drinking healthy.
o Avocados are basically a super fruit! They are SUPER good for you! Start incorporating them into your diet this summer, especially when they go on sale!
o Sandwiches are easy to add a few slices of avocado to, and it adds a great flavor.
o Wraps are easy to make, entirely customizable to each person in your house, and chicken avocado wraps with a whole wheat tortilla couldn’t be healthier! It’s filling and filled with plenty of nutrients and other healthy elements.
• Homemade dressings and dips
o Dips and dressings are where many people go wrong. Ranch on veggies, other dips for veggie trays, too much dressing on salads. This summer try making your own dips and dressings for a much healthier option.
o Dressings are easy to make on your own, and easy to make healthier. Instead of using ranch or Italian seasoning on your salad, try making a vinaigrette with some white wine vinegar, olive oil, and your favorite seasonings. This will be far healthier than those sugar filled dressings in the store! (You can also purchase healthier dressings, but it’s often cheaper, tastes better and has less sugar if you make it yourself. Many store bought varieties have added sugars for flavor.)
o Dips are also super easy to make! If you haven’t tried hummus yet, you need to! It’s made from chickpeas, and you can add any other flavoring that you would like. It’s perfect for dipping veggies in and is WAY healthier than ranch and veggie dips!
